The NXT Core wallet was launched in 2013 by an anonymous software developer. In 2017 the online version will be shut down, but the desktop one will get upgraded to faster and easier to use version. This currency is aimed at external development so it is decentralized, written in Java, and allows for the creation of other sub currencies.
Nxt core wallet is the basic wallet that was created with the coin. It has limited features and directs users to various exchanges for more functionality. What is exceptional is the multi language support. It also supports Android devices.

The wallet is managed, maintained, and developed by the same core team as the currency itself. You also have the option to store NXT sub coins like IGNIS and ANG, these will be used for smart contracts. The online version of the wallet will shut down at the end of 2017.

NXT client is not focussed on security features and has not been fully developed. The value of the NXT currency has not been fully realized so security is less of an issue at this point. This wallet does give the user control over their private keys which is always a plus.
